Investments in Hotels

With multibillion dollar portfolios, DFIs finance a range of economic activity, from textile production to tourism promotion. A significant proportion of DFI investments target the hotel industry, aiming to generate quality jobs and create an infrastructure for further international investment.

Impacts on Workers

For hotel workers, DFI financing - which is grounded in mandates to end poverty and support inclusive development – can support the creation of good jobs, and DFI engagement can safeguard workers’ rights. In some instances, however, workers’ rights have been violated and development outcomes compromised.

Solutions

For decades, private enterprise and employee groups have come to agreements on ensuring workers’ rights are respected through binding agreements.  The IUF and GLJ-ILRF have proposed a new method for realizing DFIs’ workers’ rights commitments, built on effective and time-tested policy tools.
